Rustenburg was shaken this morning after a brazen cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery unfolded near the Fresh N Frozen Butchery in the town centre. A Fidelity cash van came under heavy attack when a group of armed criminals ambushed the vehicle in what appeared to be a well-planned hit.
The Attack
According to early reports, the suspects opened fire on the van, forcing security guards to take cover as the criminals moved in. The gang made off with an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene.
Witnesses described the incident as chaotic, with gunshots echoing through the busy area as people scrambled for safety. The robbers were reported to be heavily armed, and their getaway was executed swiftly.
One Suspect Dead
During the shootout, one of the suspects was struck in the leg. In a shocking turn of events, the injured suspect allegedly turned his weapon on himself and shot himself in the head. He was declared dead at the scene.
The remaining suspects escaped and are currently being sought by authorities.
Police Launch Manhunt
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched a full-scale manhunt for the fugitives. Crime scene specialists and investigators were deployed to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and to report any information that may help track down the suspects. CIT robberies continue to be a major concern across the country, with gangs becoming more violent and tactical in their operations.
Authorities are expected to release more details as the investigation progresses.
