A tragic incident unfolded in Naas, Mpumalanga when two men lost their lives after being crushed inside a dump truck while searching for scrap materials. According to early reports, the pair had climbed onto the back of the truck, hoping to recover discarded metal items they could sell for a small income.
Witnesses indicated that the men were known in the community and allegedly struggled with Nyaope addiction. They often collected scrap to survive, moving around local dumping spots and trucks to find anything of value. On this occasion, the truck reportedly activated its compacting mechanism while they were still inside, trapping and fatally injuring both individuals.
Emergency services were called to the scene, but the men were declared dead upon arrival due to severe crush injuries. Authorities have opened an investigation to determine how the incident occurred and whether the truck operator was aware that anyone had climbed onto the vehicle.
Community members expressed sadness, noting that poverty and addiction continue to push many individuals into dangerous situations while searching for ways to earn a living. Local leaders have urged residents to avoid climbing into or onto waste vehicles, as the machinery poses extreme risks.
