Bad News for December: Petrol and Diesel Prices Set to Rise

Motorists planning festive season road trips will need to adjust their budgets as South Africa braces for another round of fuel price increases in December. After a largely positive year for fuel prices in 2025, the final month is expected to bring unwelcome news for both petrol and diesel users.

According to the latest data released by the Central Energy Fund (CEF), petrol prices are forecast to increase by around 30 cents per litre, while diesel is expected to rise even more steeply—between 70 cents (500ppm) and 85 cents (50ppm).

What’s Driving the Increase?

While the official adjustments will only be confirmed closer to the first Wednesday of December, current under-recoveries paint a clear picture. Although 95 Unleaded petrol currently shows an under-recovery of 23 cents, the most recent daily data points to more than 47 cents in the red, signalling that the final increase could climb beyond the projected 30 cents.

International oil prices and fluctuations in the rand/dollar exchange rate continue to play major roles in these price movements. Even small changes in global crude oil markets can lead to significant gains or losses locally.

How Prices Will Look in December

If the projected increases hold, motorists can expect the following estimated pump prices next month:

95 Unleaded Petrol:

Around R20.59 per litre at the coast

Approximately R21.42 per litre in Gauteng

93 Unleaded Petrol:

Expected to rise to about R21.27 per litre

Diesel (500ppm & 50ppm):

An increase of 70–85 cents per litre

Impact on Motorists

The increase comes at a time when many South Africans are preparing for holiday travel, potentially adding extra strain to festive budgets. Transport operators, long-distance travellers, and everyday commuters will feel the squeeze as fuel plays a major role in the cost of living and the movement of goods.

Looking Ahead

Although 2025 generally delivered relief at the pumps, December’s uptick serves as a reminder of the volatility of global fuel markets. Experts advise motorists to plan ahead, manage fuel consumption wisely, and stay updated on official announcements from the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy.

As the holiday season approaches, December’s fuel hike will be an unwelcome expense—but staying informed can help motorists navigate the rising costs.
