Duduza, South Africa – A wave of heartbreak and financial ruin has swept through the elderly community of Duduza following the brutal murder of beloved mashonisa (informal lender) Sabatha Motaung. Unidentified suspects not only gunned down Motaung but also made off with bank cards belonging to his clients, subsequently draining their accounts of their life savings from ATMs across Brakpan, Germiston, and Boksburg.
Motaung was tragically shot multiple times last night while opening his gate at his home in Bluegum, Duduza. It is suspected he had just returned from withdrawing money owed to him by his elderly clients, many of whom had entrusted him with their SASSA bank cards for safekeeping and easy access to funds. He was rushed to a hospital in Dunnottar but sadly succumbed to his injuries.
This afternoon, the grim reality of the situation unfolded as dozens of distressed pensioners gathered outside Motaung’s home, desperate to retrieve their bank cards and identity documents, which had also been in his possession. Their hopes were dashed when they were informed they would need to return tomorrow morning to collect their identity documents, a crucial step before they can even begin the process of applying for new bank cards.
The loss of Motaung has left a gaping void in the community. Residents universally described him as a "good and kind-hearted person." His clients, many of whom are vulnerable elderly individuals, spoke of his compassionate and respectful treatment, emphasizing that they have lost far more than just their money. "We trusted him, he never mistreated us. It hurts that someone like him was taken this way," lamented one elderly person, articulating the collective grief and sense of betrayal.
The South African Police Service has confirmed they are investigating the murder and theft. However, as of now, no arrests have been made, leaving the community grappling with profound loss and an urgent need for justice. The incident highlights the perilous vulnerabilities faced by many elderly citizens who rely on informal financial services and the devastating consequences when such arrangements are exploited by criminals.
