Western Cape Police Destroy Over 20,000 Litres of Alcohol in Crackdown on Illegal Taverns

Western Cape police have destroyed 20,050 litres of alcohol confiscated during ongoing operations targeting illegal taverns and shebeens across the province. The destruction forms part of intensified law-enforcement efforts under the Safer Festive Season Operation, which began on 13 October 2025.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), a total of 112 illegal taverns and shebeens have been shut down since the start of the operation. These establishments were found to be operating without valid licenses and in violation of liquor and municipal regulations.

Police say the operation aims to curb alcohol-related crime, reduce violence, and improve public safety during the festive season, a period traditionally associated with increased alcohol abuse and criminal activity. Confiscated liquor was seized during raids conducted in both urban and rural areas, often following community tip-offs and compliance inspections.

Western Cape SAPS spokespersons emphasized that unregulated alcohol outlets contribute significantly to serious crimes such as assault, domestic violence, and road fatalities. By removing illegal alcohol from circulation, authorities hope to create safer communities and discourage unlawful trading.

SAPS has reiterated its commitment to continue these enforcement actions throughout the festive season and beyond, warning illegal traders that law enforcement will act decisively against non-compliance. Community members are also encouraged to report illegal liquor sales to assist police in their efforts.
