A devastating accident shook a residential community in KwaZulu-Natal this week when a water tanker veered off the road and ploughed into two homes, resulting in the death of a six-year-old child and leaving another in critical condition.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene shortly after the incident, which occurred on a sloped road where the tanker reportedly lost control. The vehicle smashed through boundary walls before coming to a stop inside the living spaces of two separate homes. Eyewitnesses described the moment as "utter chaos," with the sound of the crash reverberating through the neighborhood.
Rescue workers spent over two hours sifting through the wreckage to retrieve the body of the young child, who was found trapped beneath debris. The child was declared dead at the scene. A second child, also believed to be under the age of 10, sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital where they remain in critical condition.
"We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident," said a spokesperson from the eThekwini Fire and Emergency Services. "Despite our best efforts and rapid response, we were unable to save the one child. Our thoughts are with the families affected by this horrific accident."
Preliminary investigations suggest that brake failure may have been a contributing factor, though authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause. The driver of the water tanker was treated for minor injuries and is currently assisting police with their investigation.
Community members have expressed outrage, calling for stricter vehicle maintenance standards and better regulation of heavy vehicles in residential areas. “This should never have happened,” said one resident. “We need to feel safe in our own homes.”
KwaZulu-Natal transport officials have promised a thorough investigation and pledged to review the route permissions for heavy vehicles in the area.
This tragic event has left a community in mourning and renewed calls for immediate action to prevent such accidents from occurring again.
