Police arrested 48 foreign nationals during an overnight operation in Sophiatown on Monday night, as part of a continued law-enforcement crackdown in the area.
According to preliminary information, the operation was aimed at crime prevention and compliance checks. Those arrested were reportedly unable to produce valid identification documents at the time of the police stop. They were taken into custody for further verification of their immigration and legal status.
Residents reported a visible police presence throughout the night, with officers conducting stop-and-search operations in several streets identified as crime hotspots. Authorities say the operation forms part of broader efforts to curb illegal activities and improve safety within the community.
Police have once again urged both locals and foreign nationals living in high-risk areas to always carry their identity documents. Failure to do so, officers warn, may lead to detention until one’s status is confirmed.
