Members of the Flora Stokvel in Extension 12, Tsakane, were left shocked and devastated after two suspects allegedly robbed them of approximately R108 000 while they were on their way to purchase groceries for the group.
According to early reports, the stokvel members were transporting the pooled funds when they were confronted by the suspects. The pair allegedly threatened the group before fleeing with the cash. No injuries were reported, but the emotional and financial impact on the victims has been significant.
Stokvels, which operate on trust and community cooperation, are especially vulnerable during the festive season when many groups withdraw large sums for year‑end purchases. Incidents like this highlight the growing concern around targeted crimes against community savings groups.
Police have launched an investigation and are appealing to the public for assistance. Authorities urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has information about the suspects to report it to their nearest police station.
Community members are encouraged to remain vigilant, especially when handling large amounts of money, and to consider additional safety measures when conducting stokvel transactions.
