A tragic workplace accident claimed the life of a man in Daveyton, Gauteng, this morning after he was reportedly crushed by a sand truck while on duty.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred at a construction site shortly after 9 a.m. The victim, believed to be in his mid-30s, was performing routine work near a sand delivery truck when the vehicle suddenly moved, trapping him between the truck and a mound of sand.
Bystanders and co-workers rushed to assist, but the man had suffered severe head injuries after being squeezed by the truck. Emergency services arrived swiftly, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Local authorities have cordoned off the area while investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances leading to the accident. Police spokesperson Sgt. Nhlanhla Mokoena confirmed the incident and said an inquiry has been opened.
“We can confirm that a man died after being crushed by a sand truck in Daveyton this morning. An investigation is ongoing to establish whether safety protocols were followed,” said Mokoena.
The name of the deceased has not yet been released, pending notification of his family.
Representatives from the Department of Labour are also expected to visit the site to assess compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.
Community members in Daveyton have expressed shock and sadness over the tragedy, urging employers to prioritize worker safety on construction and industrial sites.
