Diepkloof, Soweto – Tuesday, April 8, 2025
Another wave of violence has rocked Soweto's taxi industry after a taxi owner was shot and killed while getting a haircut in Diepkloof on Tuesday afternoon.
The brazen killing, which occurred in broad daylight, has sent shockwaves through the local community. The identity of the slain taxi owner has not yet been officially released, but sources close to the scene confirmed that he was a well-known figure within the local taxi industry.
While the motive for the murder remains officially unknown, police strongly suspect the incident may be linked to the ongoing conflict between rival taxi associations in Soweto. A police officer, speaking to News Timez on condition of anonymity, revealed, “It’s highly likely this was related to the current taxi war. There’s a lot of tension over routes and control.”
The incident follows another violent episode on Monday morning, when three taxi marshals affiliated with the Witwatersrand African Taxi Association (WATA) were gunned down in Mofolo Central. The victims were reportedly en route to the taxi association's office when they were ambushed by unknown gunmen.
The recent spate of killings has reignited fears among residents and those working in the taxi industry. Community members are calling for immediate intervention to curb the bloodshed and restore order in the area.
Gauteng police have confirmed they are investigating both cases and have not ruled out the possibility that the attacks are linked. No arrests have been made so far.
The Department of Transport is yet to issue an official statement, but insiders say emergency talks between government officials and taxi association leaders are being arranged to address the escalating violence.
As investigations continue, residents and commuters remain on edge, fearing further attacks in the ongoing turf war.
This is a developing story.
