DA Urges President Ramaphosa to Establish Commission of Inquiry into Buffelsfontein Mine Crisis

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to urgently set up a Commission of Inquiry into the devastating situation at the Buffelsfontein Mine in Stilfontein, North West province. This comes as more than 78 bodies of illegal miners have been recovered from the site, highlighting the grave crisis that continues to unfold at the mine.

In a letter addressed to the President, the DA emphasized the critical need for a comprehensive investigation to understand the underlying causes of the ongoing disaster. The party argues that the scale of the crisis calls for a thorough and transparent inquiry to prevent further loss of life, address safety concerns, and determine the necessary measures to safeguard communities and workers involved in mining activities.

The Buffelsfontein Mine, once a prominent gold mine, has been plagued by a range of issues including illegal mining, poor safety standards, and environmental neglect. The recovery of so many bodies underscores the dangerous and hazardous conditions under which illegal miners are forced to work. Many of these miners enter the abandoned shafts, seeking to extract valuable minerals in extremely risky and unregulated environments. The mine has long been a hotspot for illegal mining activities, but the latest tragic events have brought national attention to the dire situation.

The DA has pointed out that the South African government must take decisive action to investigate the causes of this tragedy. In their letter, the DA stresses that illegal mining poses significant risks not only to the individuals involved but also to the surrounding communities. The unsafe practices, poor oversight, and lack of regulation all contribute to the crisis, and the DA believes a Commission of Inquiry is necessary to explore solutions to prevent further tragedies.

"The Buffelsfontein Mine disaster is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by unregulated and illegal mining activities in South Africa. It is imperative that government steps in and thoroughly investigates this crisis to ensure such tragedies are prevented in the future," said the DA in their letter to Ramaphosa.

In addition to the human cost, the DA is concerned about the broader impact on the local economy and the mining industry. With illegal mining costing the country significant revenue, there is a pressing need for both short- and long-term measures to address these issues. These measures include strengthening mine safety protocols, cracking down on illegal operations, and ensuring that affected communities are provided with the support and resources they need.

The call for a Commission of Inquiry is gaining traction, as the scale of the disaster continues to unfold. As of now, authorities are working to identify the remains of the miners and assess the full extent of the crisis. The DA’s plea highlights the urgency for a coordinated and thorough investigation into the causes of the tragedy.

The tragedy at Buffelsfontein underscores the importance of addressing the challenges facing the South African mining sector, particularly the unchecked growth of illegal mining. A transparent inquiry could serve as a crucial step towards better regulation, enforcement of safety standards, and protection of lives in one of South Africa’s most perilous industries.

The DA’s appeal to President Ramaphosa is a call to action, urging the government to take swift and decisive steps to prevent further loss of life and ensure the safety and wellbeing of all South Africans involved in mining activities.
